BARBERTON — Authorities are trying to identify a dead woman found burned Sunday night along the side of a road in a rural area south of downtown.

Initial autopsy results show the woman was a victim of a violent homicide, according to a news release Monday afternoon from the Summit County Medical Examiner's Office.

Firefighters were called to the scene of a mattress fire along South Van Buren Avenue south of Eastern Road at 8:25 p.m. Sunday and discovered the body after extinguishing the blaze. The fire was reported by a passer-by.

"We just don't know what we have yet," Barberton police spokesman Marty Eberhart said Monday.

Barberton police and fire investigators, the Medical Examiner’s Office, Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Identification and the state Fire Marshal’s Office are investigating.

The fire took place in a rural location away from any residential area. The closest business there is the city's wastewater treatment plant, Eberhart said.

Anyone with information concerning the incident is asked to contact Barberton detectives at 330-848-6703.
