The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Akron Wingfoots by resurrecting the pro basketball team’s inaugural uniform with 100 limited edition replica jerseys.

The throwback jerseys will be awarded through a sweepstakes at Wingfoots100.com; fans can sign up to enter through Nov. 30.

“Our connection to basketball over the past century is a distinctive part of Goodyear’s heritage and a source of pride for our associates, our former players and basketball fans everywhere,” said Todd Macsuga, general manager of brand marketing at Goodyear, in a news release. The jerseys "honor that rich tradition.”

The Wingfoots, founded as a recreational team by Goodyear associates to test the rubber soles of athletic shoes, became one of the earliest professional basketball teams in America and were the first champions of the National Basketball League — which also included the Firestone-sponsored cross-town rival Akron Non-Skids.

Goodyear's association with basketball continues; it is in the second season of a three-season jersey patch sponsorship with the Cavaliers.
