PENINSULA — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has awarded a $425,000 contract to Ryba Marine Construction Co. for ecosystem restoration within the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

A new culvert will be installed to permit Stanford Run to flow under the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail, allowing the tributary to re-connect to the Cuyahoga River.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency provided funds for this project through the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.

"This section of Stanford Run has seen a large build-up of sedimentation over many years," Army Corps project manager Russ Brandenburg said in a prepared statement. "Reconnecting this tributary to the Cuyahoga River is important because current stream conditions include stagnant flow and ponding, and this project will help to alleviate those conditions."

The project is scheduled to be completed by October 2019.
