A fight in a southwest Canton home Thursday evening erupted into gunfire that left a southeast Canton man dead.

The shooting victim has been identified as James N. Howard, 42, of Schory Avenue SE, said Capt. Dave Davis.

Police were called at 5:20 p.m. to a house in the 1700 block of Sandwith Avenue SW in response to a shooting, he said. They arrived to find Howard lying in the driveway.

Investigators believe Howard had been inside the home, where he had been involved in an argument that became physical. Howard was shot twice, Davis said. The nature of the argument wasn’t released.

Canton Fire Department medics took Howard to Aultman Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Detectives have consulted with the Stark County Prosecutor’s Office, which determined that results of their investigation will be presented to the grand jury.

The man who pulled the trigger has been identified, but the grand jury will determine charges, Davis said.
