CANTON — Police were looking for two people in connection with the Thanksgiving Day shooting death of a southeast Canton man.

Warrants have been issued for the arrests of Arsenio C. Smith, 30, and Ashley N. Singleton, 33, according to a news release.

James N. Howard, 42, of Schory Avenue Southeast, was shot twice during a fight around 5:20 p.m. Thursday in a home in the 1700 block of Sandwith Avenue Southwest, Capt. Dave Davis said. Officers arrived to find Howard lying in the driveway. He was pronounced dead at Aultman Hospital a short time later.

The nature of the quarrel hadn’t been released.

On Friday, Davis said detectives have consulted with the Stark County Prosecutor’s Office, which determined results of the investigation will be presented to a grand jury. He said that the man who pulled the trigger had been identified, adding that the grand jury will determine charges.

On Saturday, he released a statement saying police were seeking Smith and Singleton in connection with Howard’s death.

Smith was wanted on charges of murder, felony evidence tampering and two counts of receiving stolen property.

Singleton was wanted on felony charges of obstructing justice and receiving stolen property.

Their roles in the incident were not clear. Police said more details would be released as they became available.
