Police are investigating the death of a female found in the woods around midnight Saturday in New Franklin.

Authorities are withholding the identity of the woman pending an autopsy. The Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office, which had yet to review the body, said the autopsy would be performed Monday.

The body was found in a wooded area off Rex Hill Road, Akron Police Lt. Rick Edwards said. The Ohio Attorney General’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation led the crime scene investigation. A BCI spokesperson did not return a phone call Sunday seeking more information.

Edwards said no more details would be released until after the medical examiner’s office releases its findings. New Franklin police are also working the case.

Rex Hill Road is a 1.5-mile stretch that runs west off West Turkeyfoot Lake Road then juts south, running mostly parallel to Manchester Road. A large wooded area runs along most of the east side of the road, not far from a housing development off Manchester Road. The road’s west side includes a swampy area abutting the Tuscarawas River to the north and all industrial zoned properties owned by Cleveland and Pittsburgh firms.

Police would not to say if the body is that of Samantha Anna Marie Guthrie, who was last seen in the early hours of Nov. 4 at a house on Lillian Street in Akron.

A Facebook page called "Searching for Sam" posted an update Sunday afternoon, saying: "Samantha has been found as of this morning. Please give the family time to start the grieving process. We are forever grateful for all of the love and support through this devastating time." It is not clear whether a family member created the page or posted the update.

Police had previously arrested four people they believe were with Guthrie before she disappeared. All are listed as in the Summit County Jail, according to the most recent inmate roster.

William Alexander, 38, of Akron, is being held on charges of abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence. Danny Hamby, 39, of Akron; Dylan Brown, 19, of Akron; and Toni Kenney, 31, were charged with tampering with evidence and obstructing justice, and have each been additionally charged with crimes involving firearms or drugs.

The house on Lillian Street is about 9 miles from Rex Hill Road.
