Chef Tala Epperly has been in the kitchen at Frank's Place in Akron since March, where she has put her own spin on the menu, including adding a few vegetarian dishes to the lineup.

This is a family recipe originating from my great-grandmother. It has been tweaked and loved by the generations that followed.

MOTHER'S OATMEAL COOKIES

1 cup margarine

2 cups brown sugar

2 eggs

1 tsp. salt

1 tsp. baking powder

2 cups unbleached flour

2 cups quick-cooking oats

1 tsp. vanilla

½ cup raisins

½ cup chocolate chips

½ cup shredded coconut

Soak raisins in warm water to plump and soften; drain.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Cream margarine and sugar together, then mix in eggs. Mix flour with salt and baking powder. Add dry ingredients to margarine mixture: first flour mixture, then oats. Lastly, mix in vanilla, raisins, chips and coconut. Drop by spoonfuls onto baking sheets.

Bake for 7 to 10 minutes.

Makes about 4 dozen.
