Akron has new ice bumper cars for the rink at Lock 3 park downtown.
Now all that is needed is the ice.
Friday’s opening of the ice rink for the season was delayed because the chiller that keeps the ice frozen broke.
Annie McFadden, Mayor Dan Horrigan's deputy chief of staff, said Tuesday the rink likely will be open for skaters and bumper car drivers sometime this weekend or early next week.
A new chiller is to be installed Wednesday, she said, and it will take some time before the water freezes.
“We’ll just have to gauge the weather and see how quickly the new chiller is working,” McFadden said.
The city will provide updates on the Lock 3 Facebook page, she said.
Santa, making what had been billed as a “special announcement,” revealed that bumper cars were coming to the rink at last Friday’s tree lighting at Lock 3 park.
The plan was to have the rink open that evening, but the chiller didn’t cooperate.
The battery-operated bumper cars will be used in a designated portion of the rink, meaning skaters won’t be targets.
A 10-minute ride will run $10. Groups receive discounts. For more information and bumper car hours, go to http://lock3live.com/page/bumper-cars.
The rink and indoor Polar Putt Putt are main features of Winterfest at Lock 3, in its 15th season.
Akron is getting the cars from a new company, IBC (Ice Bumper Cars) International of Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Its founder is a man who was inspired to build the cars after restoring some old ones for an ice rink where he worked.
Akron rink hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. The rink will be open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Christmas Eve and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. New Year's Eve. The rink will be closed Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Falls ice rink
For those who can’t wait to skate, the neighboring city of Cuyahoga Falls opened its new ice rink Friday at the plaza by the downtown pavilion and amphitheater on Front Street.
After years of operating a skating rink downtown during the winter months, the Falls skipped the holiday tradition last year while the city finished the construction project to reopen Front Street to traffic.
The new rink is open 3-8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 12-8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, expect holidays.
The rink will be closed Christmas and New Year’s Day and open noon-4 p.m. Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.
Downtown Canton’s ice rink, in its third year, also is open.
