EDITOR'S NOTE: This story has been update Thursday morning to reflect a revised press release from the Akron Police Department indicating only one of the teens has died.

A teenage boy died Wednesday in Akron in what appears to be an accidental shooting followed by a suicide.

Akron Police Lt. Rick Edwards said the shootings happened a little after 7 p.m at a home in the 200 block of Grand Avenue in Highland Square.

A group of teens was in a basement there when a 15-year-old pulled out a handgun, accidentally pulled the trigger and shot a 14-year-old in the head, Edwards said.

The 15-year-old, apparently stunned at what had just happened, then shot himself in the head, Edwards said.

The teens were taken to Cleveland Clinic Akron General, where the 15-year-old was pronounced dead. The 14-year-old is in critical condition.

Edwards didn’t immediately know how many other teens were in the basement. No one else was injured, Edwards said.

Police were not immediately releasing the names of the boys involved. Neither lived in the home where the shooting happened, Edwards said.

This story will be updated with more information Thursday.
