A dead body was found Monday morning in an outdoor area at the Akron Public Schools' Bridges Learning Center, 888 Jonathan Ave.

It appears the person, a 38-year-old man from Akron, had died by suicide two days earlier, authorities said.

"After collecting evidence, we do not believe it was foul play," sheriff's spokesman Bill Holland said Tuesday. "We believe it to be a suicide."

The man died of a gunshot wound and a gun was found at the scene, the Summit County Medical Examiner's Office reported. An autopsy was planned Tuesday.

Principal Stephanie Davis sent a letter home to parents, saying a fifth-grade class noticed the body. The teacher alerted a deputy who serves as a school resource officer at the school.

"Students saw very little of the actual scene," Davis wrote. "Classes in the area were immediately moved and students were never in danger."

Counseling was offered to the students.

The school was placed on lockdown for a brief time while investigators gathered evidence.

Authorities said Tuesday morning that a deputy had discovered the body, but later clarified that the deputy was alerted to the scene by a teacher.
