SMITHVILLE — If the rest of the planning stages go as smoothly as they have been, ground could be broken for a new Dollar General retail store in the northern part of the village come February.
“They have developed a site plan,” Mayor Tom Poulson said Monday at a village council meeting. “It has been given to our engineers and they are currently reviewing that on our behalf and they will (submit) any changes that need to be made to that plan.”
Poulson said that some variances, such as the number of parking spaces, need to be conceded. “Zoning code requires a certain number of parking spaces and they aren’t able to meet that,” he said. “There was a meeting and everyone agreed that 30 (parking spaces) would be adequate.”
Poulson explained that the variance is in the discussion stages at this point, and the land needs to be annexed into the village before any variances can be approved. The annexation would allow the store to obtain access to the village sewer and water system.
“We are having these discussions to work through the details,” he said. “So once the annexation is granted, and the waiting period is over, we are ready.”
