A Macedonia police officer was injured Christmas Eve after his cruiser was struck from behind by a vehicle driven by a suspected drunk driver, according to the police department.

The officer had non-life threatening injuries and was treated at Hillcrest Hospital, police said.

The police officer was backing up other officers at a traffic stop on I-271 northbound near the Cuyahoga County line when his cruiser was hit from behind shortly after 5 p.m. Monday, police said.

The driver of the vehicle that struck the cruiser was arrested at the scene. The driver, described as a 56-year-old Cuyahoga Falls man, has been charged with driving under the influence, according to police.
