Akron police ended a two-hour standoff late Friday night after a SWAT team apprehended a man holed up in a North Howard Street residence near the High Level Bridge.

Maj. Mike Caprez, deputy chief of the Akron Police Department’s uniform subdivision, said at the scene that police were called after gunshots were heard near a residence. The shots came after a man had threatened neighbors and knocked on their doors.

When officers arrived around 9 p.m., gunshots were heard again. A SWAT team was called in and secured the area at the extreme north end of North Howard Street below the southwest corner of the High Level Bridge.

The residence is part of several condominiums at the edge of Gorge Metro Park, just north of the Diplomat Apartments.

Caprez said police attempted to negotiate with the man, who declined to turn himself in.

"Ultimately," Caprez said, the SWAT team "had to put some [pepper] gas in the house."

Several SWAT members moved in about 11:20 p.m. and apprehended the man, whose name was not given.

A SWAT team member said the man did not put up a fight.

Caprez said neither the suspect nor his neighbors were hurt in the incident.

No further details were available.
