Three young men were apparently playing Russian roulette with a handgun early Saturday at an Akron home when one of them was shot in the head, police say.
The 17-year-old boy, who is from Louisville, was transported to Summa Akron City Hospital, where he is listed in grave condition.
“They were horsing around with a handgun,” said Lt. Rick Edwards, a police spokesman. “They would spin the cylinder, hand the handgun to the next person, point it near them and pull the trigger.”
Police are still trying to determine if the 17-year-old accidentally shot himself or was shot by one of the other two, a 16-year-old male from Green and a 20-year-old male from Akron, Edwards said. No charges have been filed.
The shooting was one of three over the weekend that Akron police are investigating — and the only one that involved a serious injury.
The Russian roulette incident happened about 1 a.m. in the 1000 block of Burkhardt Avenue.
The three young men, friends who met in church, were in a bedroom of the home. The gun belonged to one of them, Edwards said.
Police haven’t heard of other recent incidents in the Akron area involving young people playing Russian roulette, Edwards said.
The other two weekend shooting incidents were on Friday.
The first was shortly before 2 p.m. in the 800 block of Seward Avenue. Officers found a 21-year-old male with a gunshot wound to his shoulder. He was transported to Cleveland Clinic Akron General Hospital for a non-life-threatening injury, police say.
When the victim arrived at the hospital, he had Percocet pills on him that were tagged into evidence.
Officers observed a Chevy Impala parked in front of the house and ordered the two occupants to exit the vehicle. One of the men told officers he had a gun and that there were drugs in the car. Officers arrested Deaaron V. Price, 22, of Akron and charged him with carrying a concealed weapon, weapons while under disability and possession of drugs. He was booked into the Summit County Jail.
The suspected gunman is described as a black male, 18 to 30 years old, 5 feet 8 inches to 6 feet 2 inches tall and 180 to 240 pounds. He wore a black hooded sweatshirt, police say.
The second incident was at about 6 p.m. in the 1200 block of Lexington Avenue. A man and his girlfriend were visiting when two men entered the house and robbed the man. One suspect fired a shot at the man, striking him in the face. The victim was taken to Summa Akron City Hospital for injuries that didn’t appear life-threatening, police say.
Officers found marijuana and tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC products, in the house. THC is the chemical responsible for the majority of marijuana's psychological effects.
The shooting suspects are two black males. The first is 20 to 30 years old, 5 feet 9 inches, and 240 pounds and wore all black clothing. The second is 20 to 30 years old, 6 feet 1 inch, with a muscular build and dark hair with blond tips. He wore jeans, police say.
