ALLIANCE — Three young adults are facing criminal charges as police investigate how an 18-year-old was shot in the head.

City police said the latest information they have was the teen was taken to Aultman Hospital in Canton after the Tuesday morning shooting. The hospital could not confirm that he was a patient there as of Wednesday, leaving the teen’s condition unclear.

“In our investigation we discovered some people hindered our investigation by not telling us the truth,” police Detective Mark Welsh said. “It was reported as an accidental shooting to us. The preliminary report that we have is that he did shoot himself. ... We believe it was a handgun.”

The suspects include Caleb Kaiser, 22, of 12564 Beech St. NE, Washington Township, who is facing a felony count of violating the state prohibition against possessing a weapon. He and the other two suspects are facing misdemeanor counts of obstructing official business. The others charged are a 22-year-old woman and a 20-year-old woman. Both women are Alliance residents. The Canton Repository does not usually name those charged with misdemeanor crimes.

“They did hide a gun,” Welsh said. “We did recover a firearm. In our investigation we discovered some people hindered our investigation by not telling us the truth.”

Welsh said additional forensic investigation will have to determine if the firearm police recovered was the gun used in the shooting. The detective declined to say where in the city the shooting occurred. Police were alerted shortly after 6:30 a.m. Tuesday.

“I can’t tell you additional charges will be filed because it is still under investigation,” city Law Director Jennifer Arnold said.
