The perfect place for a weekend getaway smack dab in the cold heart of winter.
And this is exactly what two siblings will be doing this weekend.
Two brothers will spend two days exploring the Rubber City and bringing along a fair number of social media followers to learn of their adventures in our fair city.
The so-called #MysteryWeekend adventures began nearly a decade ago for Bradley Peniston and his brother, James, and sister, Christy Dixon, when on a lark they all purchased cheap airline tickets to Cleveland in the dead of winter and set out to explore as much of the city as possible.
They asked for suggestions from Clevelanders during the trip to get a better feel for what made the city tick.
This led to excursions to other exotic and cheap-to-fly-to locales like Scranton, Pa.; Duluth, Minn.; Toledo and even Kalamazoo, Mich.
And now Akron.
Bradley readily admits his knowledge of Akron was pretty limited to the image of the Goodyear Blimp and the fabled ginormous airdock.
"I want an airdock selfie," he giddily admits.
Over the years, they have turned to social media to ask locals for advice in advance on what to check out and where to eat in a particular city and, in turn, have picked up quite a few followers along the way.
Bradley said when he first told his fellow workers at Defense One, a publication in Washington that covers military news and policy, that he was traveling to Akron next they were, well, nonplussed.
But then he said he showed them pictures of the city's new bumper cars on ice at Lock 3, and they quickly realized just how chill Akron really is.
Bradley and James, who lives in Columbus, are expected to arrive in Akron on Saturday and hope to check out the flurry of suggestions offered up by Akronites on what to do while here. Their sister, Christy, unfortunately can't make this trek.
They plan on checking out Fred's Diner for breakfast and Luigi's for dinner for a salad with cheese of course.
No decision yet on the uniquely Akron appetizer of sauerkraut balls, but they hope to squeeze in a visit to LeBron James' favorite haunt, Swensons, for a Galley Boy burger. They are also hoping to catch a show at the Blu Jazz+ club.
Before revealing the destination on the internet, Bradley said he teases his siblings with some clues beforehand about where they are headed.
The email clues for this trip included among other things historic pictures of airships and album covers from Devo and the Black Keys.
"I was like, let's go see what is going on in Akron," he said.
And judging by the lengthy list of suggestions on Twitter, Bradley said, the answer is way too much to cover in just two days.
"Akronites have already been very welcoming through Twitter," he said.
