Michaels announced Wednesday that all Pat Catan's craft store locations will close their doors.
Michaels Companies Inc., which owns the Pat Catan's chain, plans to rebrand up to 12 of the shuttered stores and operate them under the Michaels name. The list of stores that will reopen as Michaels was not immediately available.
"After a comprehensive review, we have decided to close all of the Pat Catan's retail stores," Michaels Chief Executive Officer Chuck Rubin said in a prepared statement. "... We believe these changes will provide more value for customers and shareholders by enabling us to leverage a more consistent merchandise assortment and eliminate duplicative retail operating expenses."
Rubin also said the Pat Catan's chain has been struggling in the industry for some time. The company did not say what will happen to Pat Catan's employees.
"This was not an easy decision, and I am grateful for the contributions of our Pat Catan's team members," Rubin said. "As we work through the closing process, we intend to provide employment opportunities or transition support for all team members."
The process is expected to be completed by September. The company's distribution center in Strongsville will remain open, according to the prepared statement.
Tom Leonard's wife works at the Pat Catan's on Howe Avenue in Cuyahoga Falls. She found out Tuesday that she will lose her job in October after working there for only a few months.
"She only started working there for about three to four months," Leonard said. "She said not even the managers expected stores to be closing."
Pat Catan's has 26 locations in Ohio, including stores in Akron, Cuyahoga Falls, North Canton, North Ridgeville, Strongsville and Wooster.
Michaels, based in Irving, Texas, purchased Strongsville-based Lamrite West Inc., the parent company of Pat Catan's Arts and Craft Stores, in 2016 for $150 million.
Lamrite was founded in 1954 and operated 34 Pat Catan's stores and a wholesale business, Darice, also based in Strongsville, which was included in the purchase.
At the time, a spokeswoman for Michaels said no stores were expected to close or be renamed as a result of the deal.
