Maize Valley Brewery took home the top honor at last week's Stout It Out Loud.

The Marlboro Township winery-brewery's Cafe Cubano Stout was named the winner of the beer competition held during the annual stout and oyster event at the Butcher and the Brewer in Cleveland. Maize Valley bested more than 30 other breweries.

"It seemed like dumb luck or a mistake that it won," brewer Jake Turner said modestly.

Turner received a giant oyster trophy that will be on display in the taproom for the next year. (The trophy is given to the winning brewery for the year.)

He designed the beer to replicate the flavor of a strong cafe Cubano coffee, adding lactose and espresso beans after fermentation. The beer clocks in at 6.5 percent alcohol by volume.

"It's not a real bruiser of a beer," Turner said.

Cafe Cubano Stout is available on draft now at the taproom, along with a handful of other accounts.
