A jury has found a Hartville woman guilty of not paying child support — the first time in more than 10 years that a criminal non-support case has gone to trial in Summit County.

Valerie Ziemba, 50, will be sentenced April 9 on the single count of non-support of dependents, a fourth-degree felony.

Ziemba was ordered to pay child support for her four children in April 2007. A release Friday from Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh said that despite being a registered nurse, having her own catering business, and obtaining a master’s degree, Ziemba failed to make any effort to financially support her children. The case is being heard by Summit County Common Pleas Court Judge Jill Lanzinger.

“Valerie Ziemba has gone nearly 12 years without offering even a dime of financial support for her children. Although prosecuting people for not paying court ordered child support is a last resort, Ms. Ziemba must be held accountable,” Walsh said in a news release.
