Akron police say a false rumor began spreading on social media over the weekend: Someone in a black Chevrolet Impala was driving around the city shooting at people.

It's not true, they said. Police said they have fielded several calls from worried people because black Impalas are not uncommon in the city.

The rumor appears to have started after Victor Varner II, 37, was shot and killed Saturday night inside Edgewood Village Apartments. A second man, a 27-year-old, was also shot inside the apartment and was taken to Cleveland Clinic Akron General, where he was treated for a gunshot wound to the shoulder and later released.

Police at the time said someone fired several bullets into the apartment building, which is part of a large group of housing near the Akron Zoo.

Anyone with information on the shooting can call Akron police detectives at 330-375-2490 or 330-375-2TIP, the U.S. Marshals Service at 866-4-WANTED or Summit County Crimestoppers at 330-434-COPS. People can also text TIPSCO with information at 274637 (CRIMES).
