WOOSTER — The city Planning Commission gave its blessing Wednesday to Akron Children’s Hospital’s plans to construction an office building and sub-specialty center on Friendsville Road.
The facility will be built on three acres just north of HealthPoint that the Akron hospital is leasing from Wooster Community Hospital.
The 15,195-square-foot facility will house offices and exam areas, according to Justin Fye of the Mann-Parsons-Gray Architects in Fairlawn. The primary entry will be from Friendsville, he said, with a secondary access onto the drive that leads to The Arbors.
Plans for the building also show a potential 8,200-square-foot addition, though city planning and zoning manager Andrew Dutton said any such addition would require an additional approval in the future.
Planners approved the request by a vote of 7-0, subject only to the architect making some minor adjustments to the landscaping plan.
“From the hospital’s perspective, we’ve been in the community for several years,” hospital associate general counsel Tim Ziga said, referring to the existing pediatrics practice housed in the Milltown Professional Building at Milltown and Friendsville roads. In addition, he noted, a few Akron Children's specialists come to Wooster on designated days to see local patients.
The new building, Ziga said, “is really going to give us an opportunity to have more of our specialists here. ... We’re really excited. Wooster has been a great community and has really supported us, so we’re really excited.”
