Akron City Council approved a plan Monday to designate an 80-acre area on East Market Street as an entertainment district.
Called the East End, the area consists of the mixed-use space of the old Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. headquarters. It is being developed by Industrial Realty Group (IRG) and will include more liquor permits to support the burgeoning living, shopping and eating scene in the neighborhood.
State law allows cities to approve a limitless number of "community entertainment districts." Akron has only two, covering the northern and southern ends of downtown.
A tax break for all of East End has helped the developer with the cost of converting the commercial space into apartments and offices.
