A 31-year-old West Akron man Tuesday afternoon reported he fought off a trio of home invaders who came into his home carrying a handgun and a sledge hammer.

Police said the incident happened about 4 p.m. in the 300 block of Storer Avenue and unfolded like this:

Three men entered the victim's home, came upstairs and pointed a handgun at the victim, demanding he open a safe, which was downstairs.

The victim went downstairs and noticed one of the men had a sledgehammer.

When they were near the safe, the victim began wrestling the gun away from one of the home invaders. Two of the men fled the home and when the victim finally had control of the home invader's gun, he fired a shot inside his house toward a thief as he ran out a back door.

The victim was treated at Cleveland Clinic Akron General for a cut on the head and was expected to be OK, police said.

Police said they recovered the victim's mobile phone — which was taken during the home invasion —the sledge hammer and the handgun involved in the incident.
