A Summit County judge has denied a request from an Akron man to withdraw his guilty plea in a case involving two overdose deaths.
Shawndre Springfield, 20, is accused of selling carfentanil in July 2016 to a 22-year-old man who died after taking it. While out on bond, prosecutors say Springfield sold drugs in September 2016 to another person who shared them with a 40-year-old Hudson woman who fatally overdosed.
Springfield pleaded guilty in November to two counts of involuntary manslaughter, with several other drug charges expected to be dropped.
Springfield, however, filed a request Dec. 24 asking to withdraw his plea. Kirk Migdal, Springfield’s attorney, said during a January hearing that Springfield has maintained his innocence and perhaps the case should be tried. He said there are “a lot of questions of fact.”
Assistant Prosecutor Felicia Easter, however, urged Jones to deny Springfield's request. She said he knew his rights and was represented by a competent attorney.
Jones denied the request in a ruling Friday that didn’t explain her reasoning. A sentencing date hasn’t yet been set.
