Authorities Saturday continued searching for a prisoner who escaped in chains from a rest area on Interstate 71 in Wayne County.

Said Ali El-Khatib, 33, apparently slipped away from a private company hired to move him from a prison in New York to Indiana when they took a travel break on the freeway outside of West Salem late Friday.

Authorities urged people in the rural area surrounding the rest area to lock their doors and take their keys out of their vehicles.

El-Khatib was wearing a chain around his waist that was shackled to his ankle.

Although some local media outlets have reported El-Khatib has "violent tendencies," the Beacon Journal found no obvious record of that in his criminal history, which involves theft and escape.
