BARBERTON — Barberton city school buildings were placed on a "soft lockdown" for several hours Thursday as a precaution after a 43-year-old Akron man threatened to commit suicide in the parking lot of Barberton Middle School.
The man, who was not at the school at the time the threat was reported to police, was taken into custody by Akron police and then transported by Barberton police to a hospital for an evaluation and treatment. He had no weapon in his possession when he was taken into custody, police said.
Barberton police spokesman Marty Eberhart said the man made no threat against students or school buildings. No charges have been filed.
"It's more about getting him the help that he needs," Eberhart said.
Police often hear reports of suicidal individuals, but this was different because of the potential location, he said. The man is the father of a student at the school.
