Great Lakes Brewing Co. has been recognized by Forbes as one of its "Forbes Small Giants: The Best Small Companies of 2019."

"These 25 companies are all privately owned and closely held, and they share a commitment to being the best at what they do, providing stellar service to customers, offering employees fulfilling, rewarding work and being vital members of their communities," senior editor Susan Adams wrote.

Forbes noted that the Cleveland brewery — known for beers such as Dortmunder Gold, Christmas Ale and Edmund Fitzgerald — had revenue of $45 million last year and highlighted its new employee stock ownership program. "Great Lakes was the first craft brewer in Ohio and is known for its environmental initiatives, recycling more than 70% of its waste," the business publication reported.

Great Lakes was thrilled with the recognition.

"As we've grown over 30 years, we've stayed true to the values that have helped us remain independent: respecting resources, fostering relationships, sharing success, and brewing consistent, quality beer," the brewery said in a prepared statement. "We are honored to see this work recognized by Forbes."

The Forbes Small Giants list appears in the May 31 edition of the magazine.
