MASSILLON — Police arrested a man accused of holding his girlfriend hostage while swinging a machete at her, striking her at one point.

Richard R. Spells III, 39, of 713 N. Erie St., was arrested at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the 200 block of South Mill Street on warrants charging him with felony domestic violence, felonious assault and unlawful restraint, Stark County Jail records show.

Stark County court records show the warrants were issued May 2 for his arrest after the 38-year-old woman told police that he assaulted her and, when she tried to leave, grabbed her and kept her in an upstairs bedroom as he accused her of having another man in the house.

The woman told police that he struck her in the face several times throughout the night, and that he swung a machete at her, causing a laceration when he struck her in the arm, the court records show.

The records did not provide information about her escape nor list whether she received medical treatment.

But police arrested Spells on Tuesday.

Court records also show that he went to prison in 2007 for felony domestic violence and disrupting public services.

He remained in the jail Wednesday, held in lieu of $50,500 bond pending Massillon Municipal Court hearings.
