A 6-year-old girl remained in critical condition at Akron Children's Hospital on Friday evening after a house fire Thursday night on Laffer Avenue in Akron's Goodyear Heights neighborhood.
The house in the 1200 block of Laffer Avenue was engulfed when firefighters arrived around 7 p.m. and the child had to be rescued from the basement, fire department spokeswoman Lt. Sierjie Lash said Friday. The girl's mother and father and the girl's three siblings were at home at the time of the fire, she said.
The father, who attempted to rescue the 6-year-old, suffered burns on his arm. He was treated at Akron Children's Hospital's burn unit and later released.
Authorities don't know what caused the fire, and they are still collecting evidence at the scene, Lash said.
A firefighter also suffered an injury unrelated to the fire and is doing OK now, Lash said.
She did not know if the home had working smoke detectors.
A neighbor called 911 about the fire.
The house is located near the intersection of Laffer and Iroquois avenues.
