BRUNSWICK — A man shot himself and died Tuesday afternoon at the Giant Eagle store at 3440 Center Road, police said.

Authorities were called the scene at 2:47 p.m. to a report of a man with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police said the man "was distraught over relationship issues."

No other individuals were injured, police said.

The grocery store was closed Tuesday after the shooting.

"We are heartbroken over the tragic event that took place in our Brunswick Giant Eagle this afternoon," the grocery store chain said in a statement issued Tuesday. "Our thoughts and prayers are with all those impacted by the incident, including our Team Members and customers. We are grateful for the efforts of the first responders and are continuing to work with the authorities as they investigate the matter. We are offering support to all of our customers and Team Members, and have temporarily closed the location with plans to resume normal hours of operation by [Wednesday] morning."

Comments in a Facebook posting by the Brunswick Police Department said the man had shot himself after breaking up with his girlfriend. Another comment by an individual who said she was at the Giant Eagle when the shots occurred said families and children were in the vicinity when the incident happened.
