CANTON — Two police cruisers searching for a car involved in a shots-fired report collided, sending one slamming into a nearby garage in a northwest Canton neighborhood late Wednesday night.

Two of the four officers involved were hurt, but their injuries were described as minor, said Canton Police Lt. Dennis Garren, police spokesman.

Details about the gunfire call from earlier were not available, but troopers with the Ohio Highway Patrol are investigating the crash, as is standard procedure when a city police cruiser is involved in an accident, Garren said.

The crash occurred about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 1800 block of Fourth Street Northwest.

Lt. Leo Shirkey of the patrol's Canton post said Cruiser No. 26 was heading north on Lincoln Avenue Northwest and slowed for a stop sign before proceeding into the path of eastbound Cruiser No. 93. The vehicles collided, causing No. 26 to come to rest off the right side of the road, while No. 93 struck the left side of a brick garage, heavily damaging it.

The driver of No. 93 and the passenger of No. 26 were treated for minor injuries at the scene.

No citations were issued, Shirkey said, adding, "They were in the performance of their duties, responding to a call."
