A Northfield man was taken by helicopter to Summa Akron City Hospital after being injured when a stolen car crashed early Wednesday morning in Deerfield following a high-speed chase with state troopers.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol attempted to stop a white 2017 Hyundai Elantra eastbound on Interstate 76 about 4:05 a.m. The car had been reported stolen in Akron, the patrol said.

The patrol added that Akron police had initially pursued the vehicle but stopped the chase. Portage County received information on the car and came across it on I-76.

The driver, Jerry T. Burton, exited the highway onto state Route 14 and headed south at a high rate of speed. Burton then turned onto Bandy Road in Deerfield.

Burton lost control of the car, which went off the road, hitting several trees and a fence before coming to rest in a field. The driver was trapped in the wreckage and had to be freed.

Burton suffered nonlife-threatening injuries, authorities said. No one else was involved in the crash, and no one else was injured.

Burton is a suspect in the car’s theft but had not been charged, according to the patrol.
