An arrest has been made in California in connection with the fatal June 27 shooting at Brick City Lounge in Canton Township, according to Stark County Sheriff George T. Maier.

At 4:45 Wednesday afternoon, Deny King, 25, of Moreno Valley, Calif., was arrested in Riverside County, Calif. King also has a residence in Canton.

The Stark County Sheriff’s Office with assistance from the U.S. Marshal’s Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force, the Pacific Southwest Regional Task Force Central District of California U.S. Marshals, and the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office arrested King.

Stark County deputies say a fight on the Brick City Lounge patio spilled into the bar last week. Two men left, but one tried to return as bar manager Jason Calhoun tried to lock up. When Calhoun denied the man entry, the man opened fire.

Calhoun, 41, was killed, and a bar patron was wounded.

King was arrested without incident Wednesday in Hemet, Calif. and transported to the Cois Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta, Calif. on one count of aggravated murder and one count of felonious assault. Hemet is just outside of Los Angeles.

King previously was arrested in Stark County in 2018 and indicted on four felonies, including two counts of felonious assault with a firearm specification, tampering with evidence and misdemeanor assaulting a police horse or dog after he failed to comply with an officer’s order. That case is still pending.

“This is yet another example of a true collaborative effort among law enforcement and showcases our continued dedication to keep the communities we serve safe,” Maier said. “We thank all agencies involved for their role in removing a dangerous suspect from the streets.”

The investigation continues and extradition back to Stark County is pending. Anyone with information is asked to call the Stark County Sheriff’s Office at 330-430-3800.
