University of Akron President-Elect Gary L. Miller on Wednesday named Wayne Hill as vice president and chief of staff.

Hill is UA's current vice president of communication and marketing. He will serve in the new role effective immediately, according to a news release from the university, but the change in his position is pending approval by the board of trustees.

He will stay at his current salary of $194,361, a university spokesperson said.

Hill will serve as an adviser to Interim President John Green and to Miller, according to the news release. Miller will assume his duties Oct. 1. The board appointed him as president last week. Hill is Miller's first publicly announced appointment.

In a prepared statement, Miller called Hill "exactly the right person for this position at this important moment in the history of the University of Akron."

"The vice president and chief of staff is a key leadership position in my administrative model," Miller said. “It extends our ability to listen and build consensus, and to work together strategically. It is also a role that requires uncommon wisdom, experience, diplomacy and the ability to speak the truth. Wayne exhibits all these attributes and more."

Hill joined the university in November 2011 as an associate vice president for communications and marketing and was named VP of communications and marketing in 2017.

The university will conduct a search for his replacement, the release said.
