A Kent Theodore Roosevelt High School employee was injured Friday afternoon in a fire that was contained to a classroom at the school.
He was transported to Akron Children's Hospital by Kent Fire Department EMS. The extent of his injuries is not known. No students were injured.
Lt. James Samels of the Kent Fire Department said another staff member put out the small fire in a chemistry lab with a fire extinguisher before the department arrived on scene.
The department was called around noon and students remained outside of the school until about 1 p.m.
Teachers also evacuated the building with all the students, so no students were in danger, he said.
The fire did not spread and damage to the building was limited, he said.
Both Kent Fire and the Kent School District declined to provide the staff member’s name, citing privacy and the desire to reach out to the family first.
“I wish it had never happened, but everyone did what they were supposed to,” said George Joseph, Kent Schools superintendent.
