High school notebook

East finished off the nonconference portion of its regular-season football schedule with a 39-14 win over host Mentor Lake Catholic on Friday night.

East (4-1) will enter City Series play against Kenmore-Garfield (0-5) on Friday night at the University of Akron’s InfoCision Stadium. The Dragons opened the season with wins over Jackson, Springfield and North Canton Hoover and a loss to Dover.

Richtell McCallister had touchdown runs of 80 and 64 yards in Week 5 against Mentor Lake Catholic (3-2), and Kyre Williams rushed for a 9-yard touchdown.

McCallister finished with 162 yards on five carries, and Williams had 121 yards on 14 carries.

East’s Bangally Kamara scored two touchdowns — one after he scooped up the ball after Daiiyon Somerville blocked a punt and ran 40 yards and another after he intercepted a deflected pass and sprinted 95 yards to the end zone. The other Dragons' touchdown came from Amarian Robinson, who returned an interception 55 yards.

“Jonathan Russell had 12 tackles in the game and Dee’Arius Reese dominated during the game,” East coach Marques Hayes said. “It doesn’t always up show in the stats, but Dee’Arius faced constant double teams. He has a high football IQ out there and we go as he goes."

Kamara added nine tackles and Emil Jackson and Claude Williams each had eight tackles, Hayes said.

Elsewhere in the City

• Buchtel (3-2, 2-0) beat North 49-0 on Friday at Ellet with Martavian Johnson rushing for a touchdown and returning a punt for a score. The Griffins, who host Lakewood St. Edward (2-2), also received a rushing touchdowns from O’Rell Williams, Zayir Keen, Devon Fox, Robert Young-Jones and Nino Jennings against the Vikings (0-5, 0-2).

• Ethan Jones ran for two scores, and Christian Whack ran for a touchdown and caught a touchdown pass from Josh Merring to help propel Ellet (4-1, 2-0) to a 43-6 win over host Kenmore-Garfield on Saturday. Travon Walker and Samarius Isom also contributed rushing touchdowns for the Orangemen, who are at Cleveland Heights Lutheran East (2-3) in Week 6.

Wright’s big night

Ethan Wright ran for three touchdowns and caught a touchdown pass from Nick Mayer to spark host Manchester (4-1, 2-0 PAC-7) to a 38-20 win over Triway (2-3, 0-2) on Friday. Mayer also threw a touchdown pass to AJ Johnson, and Hunter Foster added a rushing score for the Panthers, who will host Fairless (2-3, 0-2) in Week 6.

Doubleheader action

Archbishop Hoban hosted St. Vincent-St. Mary for a soccer doubleheader Saturday night.

The boys match ended in a 1-1 draw, and the girls ended with Hoban winning 8-0. Miriam Szijarto scored two goals and Jessica Sheldon, Olivia Mondello, Maddy McNulty, Lexi Zupsansky, Taylor Westover and Zoie Gilliam each added a goal for the Knights.
