Kathryn Ellison had the game-winning kill in the fifth set to give the Kent State volleyball team a 3-2 win over the University of Akron on Friday in Kent.
The Golden Flashes (8-9, 1-2 Mid-American Conference) won the first set 27-25, but the Zips (8-6, 0-3) won the second set 32-30 and the third set 25-17 before the Flashes rallied to win the fourth set 25-18 to force a fifth and deciding set.
The Flashes had a 13-12 lead in the fifth set and took the match on consecutive kills by Melissa Kolurbasi and Ellison.
Ellison and Amy Kober each had 16 kills and Alex Haffner had 42 assists to lead the Flashes. Kayla Gwozdz had 20 kills and Emily Weigand had 34 assists to lead the Zips.
Cameron Shedenhelm scored off a deflection in the 84th minute to give host Kent State a 1-0 win over Ball State.
The Golden Flashes (5-5-1, 1-2-0) had a 14-2 advantage in shots, including a 5-0 edge in shots on goal, in their first conference win of the season.
• Sabrina McNeill scored in the 97th minute to lift visiting Eastern Michigan to a 1-0 in overtime over the University of Akron (4-6-1, 1-2-0).
