Kent State 3, Akron 2

The visiting Golden Flashes held off a comeback attempt to win the annual rivalry match between the two schools.

International freshman Melissa Kolurbasi led Kent State (13-15, 6-8) with 13 kills, and also blocked three kill attempts. Erin Gardner added 19 digs.

Akron sophomore Emily Weigand had team highs in assists (51), digs (15) and service aces (2), and Ashley Richardson tallied 14 kills for the Zips (11-14, 3-11).

 

FIELD HOCKEY

Miami (OH) 5, Kent State 3

Despite a standout effort by sophomore Emma Bressler, the Golden Flashes fell on the road to the top-seeded RedHawks in the Mid-American Conference championship game.

Bressler scored two goals and assisted on another to help Kent State (8-12) stay in the game, and senior Pippa Best found the net for the final goal in the 68th minute.

Kent State's Jessica Apelt, Helen Harper and Courtney Weise were named to the all-tournament team.

 

SWIMMING

Akron 176, Ball State 121

The No. 22-ranked Zips (2-0, 2-0) defeated the host Cardinals in a Mid-American Conference dual, taking first place in all but one swimming event.

A power outage caused the cancellation of Akron's home match against Western Michigan. It will not be made up.
