Tallmadge three-sport athlete Sam Seeker has decided to pursue baseball in college, and Wednesday he signed a national letter of intent to play at the University of Toledo.

Seeker helped Tallmadge win the Division II state championship as a sophomore in 2017 and reach the Division II state semifinals as junior last season.

“I’m extremely excited for the opportunity,” Seeker said. “Toledo is the right fit for me because the coaches called me the first day they were allowed to reach out to me and showed how much they really cared about me and wanted me to be a part of their program.”

Seeker, who is 6-foot-2 and 200 pounds, is an outfielder and pitcher at Tallmadge. He said Toledo is recruiting him to play both positions.

Tallmadge posted a 25-7 record in 2017. The Blue Devils defeated Canton South (3-2), Springfield (6-2) and Northwest (14-4) to win a district title, beat Chardon Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin (3-1) and Canfield (3-2) to win a regional crown and then won a state championship by topping Maumee (4-1) in a semifinal and Dayton Chaminade Julienne (4-0) in the final.

Seeker batted .313 as a sophomore with 20 hits in 64 at-bats, with nine walks, 19 runs scored, 14 RBI, three home runs, one triple and seven doubles.

As a junior, Seeker helped Tallmadge go 19-12 by batting .292 with 21 hits in 72 at-bats, with 16 walks, 26 runs scored, 17 RBI, three triples and six doubles.

“Sammy is a high energy team first kid,” Tallmadge baseball coach Kenny Linn said. “He is as competitive of an athlete as anyone I have ever coached. Coach [Cory] Mee from Toledo got a steal out of this area. When he is able to just commit full time to the sport of baseball, the sky is the limit. We are excited to have him for one more spring.”

Seeker, who has a 3.8 GPA, also plays football and basketball.

As a senior quarterback, he completed 95-of-190 passes for 1,568 yards and 12 touchdowns and rushed for 1,702 yards and 13 touchdowns on 150 carries for coach Alan Vanderink.
