Zips defeat UTEP at Holiday Hoops Classic

Megan Sefcik scored 17 points, Shaunay Edmonds added 13 points and the University of Akron defeated UTEP 64-57 on Friday at the Las Vegas South Point Holiday Hoops Classic.

The score was tied 45-45 after three quarters before the Zips (8-2) outscored the Miners (3-9) 19-12 in the fourth quarter to earn a win in their final road nonconference game of the season.

The Zips host Malone on Saturday and begin Mid-American Conference play on Jan. 5 at Central Michigan.

Golden Flashes cruise past NJIT

Megan Carter scored 19 points and Asiah Dingle added 15 points for Kent State in a 57-40 win over NJIT in Newark, N.J.

The Golden Flashes (6-4) erased a three-point deficit at the end of the first quarter with a 12-8 run in the second quarter to take a one-point halftime lead.

The Flashes outscored the Highlanders 20-12 in the third quarter to take a 40-31 lead and pulled away in the fourth quarter.

Dingle also had two assists and three steals, and Meriss Barber-Smith led the Flashes with nine rebounds.
