Inaugural game for Kent State

Kent State began its inaugural season with a 19-8 loss at Cincinnati on Sunday.

Freshman Abby Jones fired the first goal in Kent State lacrosse history to tie the score 1-1 early in the first half. Three consecutive Cincinnati goals followed before Jones scored her second unassisted goal of the game.

The Flashes' first three goals were unassisted before Kelli Bailey tallied the first assist in program history when she set up Megan Kozar for her second goal of the game.

Lluna Katz and Graceyn Dean each also recorded her first career goals in the first half. Katz scored on a free position shot and Dean scored off an assist by Kozar.

Jones recorded her third goal of the game late in the second half to give her a hat trick. Katz also added another goal in the second second, and freshman goalkeeper Grace Merrill (Jackson) recorded 14 saves on 39 shots.

 

WRESTLING

Central Michigan downs Kent State

Kent State stayed within striking distance of Central Michigan throughout a Mid-American Conference dual, but the Chippewas won the final match to clinch a 23-12 win in Kent.

The Golden Flashes won four matches and trailed by just two points (14-12) after eight matches. Tim Rooney (133 pounds), Kody Komara (149), Perry graduate Isaac Bast (165) and Lake graduate Andrew McNall (184) were Kent's individual winners.

 

SOFTBALL

Kent State wins in Florida

Kent State finished the opening weekend of play 3-2 with a 9-2 win over Penn State at the FGCU Kickoff Classic in Fort Myers, Fla. It was the Golden Flashes' second consecutive win over the Nittany Lions (1-3), during which they outscored Penn State 20-2 and outhit them 21-5.

Down 2-0, the Flashes exploded for seven runs in the top of the fourth inning on two-run singles by Hunter Brancifort and Bailey Brownfield. Andrea Scali was the benefactor of the offensive output, improving to 3-0 with four innings after relieving starter Madi Huck.

 

Akron improves to 2-1-2

The University of Akron defeated Morgan State 5-0 and then tied East Tennessee State 6-6 to close out their first tournament of the spring at the third day of the Blue Hose Invitational in Clinton, S.C.

The Zips' Adrian Smith and Mikayla Newland combined for a three-hit shutout of the Bears to start the day.

In the second game, East Tennessee State (2-0-1) score a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the score 6-6. Led by Macky Mitchiner and Sydney Jascoe with two hits apiece, Akron (2-1-2) outhit the Buccaneers 9-6.

 

WOMEN'S GOLF

Kent third after first day

The Golden Flashes were tied for third with Purdue at 4 over after the first round of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic. Arkansas led at 1 over and Texas Christian University was secod at plus 2.

Kent's State's Karoline Stormo shot a 3-under 69 on the Rio Mar Country Club's River Course to put  her in a three-way tie for second.

Chloe Salort, playing as an individual for the Flashes, was in fifth place with an opening-round 70.
