Ball State tops Akron

14-6 in MAC opener

The University of Akron opened Mid-American Conference action with a 14-6 loss to host Ball State on Friday. The Cardinals (23-10, 1-0) scored four runs in the fifth and won the game on a run rule with three runs and nobody out in the sixth to win their MAC opener.

The Cardinals scored five runs off Zips starter Adrian Smith, and followed with six more runs off her sister, Amaya Smith (2-5), who suffered the loss.

Sydney Jascoe posted a team-high three hits with a double, home run, run scored and a RBI for UA (6-12-2, 0-1), which scored six runs on eight hits.

Kent State defeats

Toledo 6-1 on road

Kent State used five extra-base hits and the pitching of Andrea Scali to open MAC play with a 6-1 win at Toledo. Scali pitched all seven innings, allowing one run on four hits with nine strikeouts and six walks. 

Kent State (7-15, 1-0) was led by Kennadie Goth's three hits and Carlee Selle's single and two-run home run. Toledo (8-16, 0-1) was outhit 10-4 by the Flashes.

 

WOMEN'S LACROSSE

Gardner-Webb beats

KSU 20-12 in snow

Gardner-Webb (5-4) beat Kent State 20-12 in the snow at Dix Stadium. Megan Kozar and Abby Jones did their best to keep the Golden Flashes (0-9) in the game, scoring four and three goals, respectively.

Kelli Bailey and Katie Stachler each scored her first goal of the season in the second half for Kent State.

4-3 in MAC opener

The University of Akron (16-3, 1-0) opened MAC play with a 4-3 win over Miami at the LaTuchie Tennis Center in Stow for their eighth consecutive victory. In the deciding match at No. 1 singles, UA captain Sophia Geier edged Brindtha Ramasamy 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (3).
