Looking to end an early season funk, the Chicago Cubs shook up their struggling bullpen Saturday by demoting right-hander Carl Edwards Jr. to Triple-A and placing left-hander Mike Montgomery on the 10-day injured list.

The Cubs called up relievers Allen Webster and Kyle Ryan from Triple-A Iowa. Chicago has dropped six straight since winning on opening day, and its bullpen entered Saturday with an 8.54 ERA.

Edwards has a 32.40 ERA in four appearances this season. Eight of the 13 batters he's faced have reached safely, and three of them homered. That includes a two-run shot by Milwaukee's Orlando Arcia in the Brewers' 13-10 win Friday night.

Manager Joe Maddon wants Edwards to clear his head in Iowa for a bit. The lanky righty had a 2.60 ERA in 58 appearances last season, and Maddon expects he'll be back at some point.

Rockies payday

The blazing fastball of German Marquez elevated him to the big leagues. His investment in a couple of electric breaking pitches just earned him big bucks.

Marquez and the Colorado Rockies agreed to a $43 million, five-year contract Saturday.

The right-hander's new contract calls for a $1.5 million signing bonus, payable within 30 days of the deal's approval by the commissioner's office, and salaries of $1 million this year, $4.5 million in 2020, $7.5 million in 2021, $11 million in 2022 and $15 million in 2023. Colorado has a $16 million option for 2024 with a $2.5 million buyout.

Already armed with a 95-mph fastball, Marquez has steadily developed a mystifying slider and curve. He's working on a changeup that could take him to an even higher level.

Tigers' Moore injured

Matt Moore left Detroit's game against Kansas City on Saturday with a sprained right knee after pitching the first three innings.

Moore retired the first eight hitters he faced, striking out the side in the second, but with two out in the third, he went to the ground to field Billy Hamilton's bunt to the right of the mound. Hamilton ended up with an infield single, and Moore threw wildly to first for an error, allowing the batter to reach second.

Moore retired Whit Merrifield on a grounder for the third out, but the Tigers got Daniel Norris up in the bullpen, and he came on in the fourth in relief.

Detroit announced it would put Moore on the 10-day injured list.
