First baseman/outfielder Tyler Austin has been traded to the San Francisco Giants from the Minnesota Twins for minor-league outfielder Malique Ziegler.

The 27-year-old Austin played in two games for the Twins after making the team out of spring training. He will be added to the 25-man roster. San Francisco announced Monday it has designated infielder/outfielder Connor Joe for assignment to clear room on the 40-man roster.

Austin, acquired by the Twins from the New York Yankees last year for pitcher Lance Lynn, played in a career-high 69 games last season and had several other career bests: 10 home runs and 17 RBI with 10 doubles. But the Twins claimed first baseman C.J. Cron off waivers from the Tampa Bay Rays during the offseason, lessening Austin's value.

Hitless record

Chris Davis set the major-league record for the longest hitless streak by a position player, going 0-for-47 during an unproductive run that began last year.

Baltimore's highly paid first baseman was retired in his first three trips to the plate Monday against Oakland, leaving him hitless in 26 at-bats this season. Combined with his 0-for-21 finish last year, Davis broke the mark previously held by Los Angeles Dodgers infielder Eugenio Velez for the lengthiest run of futility by a non-pitcher, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Strain cuts start

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu left his start against the St. Louis Cardinals with a strained left groin, an injury that sidelined him for 90 games last season.

Severino to get MRI

New York Yankees ace Luis Severino is returning to New York to have more tests on his injured right shoulder.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone says Severino isn't where he wants to be and the team wants an examination to determine why he isn't progressing as expected. Severino was supposed to start on Opening Day but has been out since he was scratched with right shoulder inflammation from what would have been his first spring training appearance on March 5.

Boone said in Houston that Severino will see head team physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad and have an MRI and possibly other tests on Tuesday.
