Ohio sweeps UA

Ohio University launched eight home runs in a Saturday afternoon sweep of Akron, winning the opener 9-1 before taking the second game 13-5.

Laura Lakins provided the only run of the first game for Akron (8-25-2, 2-12) with a solo homer to left field.

KSU loses lead

Usually reliant on solid pitching and great defense, Kent State gave up 20 runs on 30 hits in dropping both ends of a Mid-American Conference doubleheader to Miami.

The sweep forced a three-way tie for first place in the MAC between the Golden Flashes, Ball State and Miami.

The first game was a heartbreaking loss as Kent State (18-20, 8-4) fell 4-3 in 14 innings. That carried over to a 16-3 drubbing in the second game.

The three runs in the first game came on solo home runs by Bailey Brownfield, Maria Cegledy and Jen Cader.

Megan Turner finished the day 6-for-9 overall with five singles, a home run and two RBI.

Kirby short of cycle

Justin Kirby went 6-for-7 and fell just short of a cycle in the second game as Kent State split a MAC doubleheader with visiting Central Michigan.

The Golden Flashes (15-18, 5-5) let the first game get away by giving up three runs in the top of the ninth to fall 7-4, before piling up runs in a dominant 12-4 win in the second game.

Kirby was a perfect 3-for-3 in the second game with a double, triple and home run. He scored all three times and drove in one. He finished the doubleheader with five runs scored and three RBI.
