The Boston Red Sox designated former top prospect Blake Swihart for assignment, shaking up their situation at catcher.
The team announced the move before the start of a two-game series against the New York Yankees. Catcher Sandy Leon was promoted from Triple-A Pawtucket to back up Christian Vazquez, and right-hander Erasmo Ramirez also was brought up Tuesday.
Swihart, 27, was a first-round pick by Boston in 2011. The switch hitter hasn't delivered at the plate, batting .255 with nine homers and a .679 OPS in 203 games.
Leon caught 87 games for the World Series champions last year.
Blake Snell injured
The Tampa Bay Rays placed ace left-hander Blake Snell on the 10-day injured list after he broke a toe on his right foot while he was at home Sunday night.
Snell, 26, got hurt when he got out of the shower and then attempted to move a large granite item. The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner says it was a "really dumb" move.
Snell says "It's like a three-piece set and this pole that comes up like 2½, 3 feet. Went to move it, I lifted it up and it wasn't glued to the pole and the pole came crushing down."
Snell is 2-1 with a 2.16 ERA in four starts this season. He is eligible to return April 24.
Yankees infielder hurt
The New York Yankees placed first baseman Greg Bird on the 10-day injured list with a left plantar fascia tear.
The oft-injured Bird has never played more than 82 games in a season, missing most of that time due to issues with his right ankle. It's unclear when he suffered this injury to his left foot. He's batting .171 with one homer and .550 OPS.
More than half of New York's starting lineup was already on the injured list.
Racist messages sent
Major League Baseball is investigating racist messages sent to Chicago Cubs reliever Carl Edwards Jr. on Instagram this month.
Edwards was optioned to Triple-A Iowa after he had trouble with his motion and got off to a tough start this season.
Theo Epstein, president of baseball operations for the Cubs, condemned the content of the messages. "In a sport that celebrates diversity and unites people from all backgrounds, we are appalled anyone claiming to be a fan would send divisive and bigoted insults to a player," Epstein said in a prepared statement.
All-Star Game set
The 2026 All-Star Game will be played in Philadelphia to mark the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
Commissioner Rob Manfred made the announcement Tuesday at Independence Hall with a cast of All-Stars behind him, including Phillies Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt and six-time All-Star Bryce Harper.
This will be the first All-Star Game at Citizens Bank Park, which opened in 2004. The 1976 All-Star Game was played at Veterans Stadium to mark the 200th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, and the 1996 All-Star Game also was played at the Vet. The 1943 and 1952 games were at Shibe Park.
