CLEVELAND — The Browns announced rookie cornerback Greedy Williams will start opposite Pro Bowler Denzel Ward in the season opener Sunday against the Tennessee Titans at FirstEnergy Stadium.

Veteran cornerback Terrance Mitchell had practiced with the first-team defense ahead of Williams for the vast majority of training camp. Mitchell is listed above Williams on the depth chart the Browns distributed to media.

But there were signs last week in practice that the Browns were preparing Williams, a second-round draft pick (No. 46 overall), for a starting role. As for Mitchell, he is still expected to receive playing time against the Titans.

On Thursday, Browns defensive coordinator Steve Wilks said of Williams and Mitchell, "Look for both of those guys to be in there at some point in time."

The following Browns players will be inactive: quarterback Garrett Gilbert, wide receiver Taywan Taylor, rookie linebacker Sione Takitaki (hamstring), defensive end Genard Avery, center Austin Corbett, guard Wyatt Teller and tight end Ricky Seals-Jones.

The Titans will be without two starting offensive linemen. Pro Bowl left tackle Taylor Lewan is suspended, and right guard Kevin Pamphile will be inactive with a knee injury. Dennis Kelly is filling in for Lewan. Jamil Douglas is expected to start at right guard.

The other Titans inactives will be cornerback Tye Smith, running back Dalyn Dawkins, linebacker David Long, offensive lineman Nate Davis, defensive lineman Matt Dickerson and linebacker Reggie Gilbert (knee).

Game captains

Quarterback Baker Mayfield, linebacker Christian Kirksey and long snapper Charley Hughlett are the Browns' permanent captains. Their game captains for the opener will be linebacker Adarius Taylor, safety Morgan Burnett and receiver Jarvis Landry.
