Crazy things can happen when a full moon looms on a Friday the 13th.
Such was the case when Cleveland St. Ignatius visited Akron to take on Archbishop Hoban in what many referred to as the football Game of the Week in the state of Ohio.
If lightning strikes in the distant skies off to the north and west, and semi-truck drivers pulling the occasional horn on I-76 were not enough, Hoban had a 25-point lead erased in the second half and Ignatius rallied to earn a stunning 42-41 victory.
The loss ended a 31-game winning streak for Hoban (2-1), which won its fourth state championship in a row last season.
The game ended in dramatic fashion with Hoban senior Ja’Sean Cogburn returning a kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown to cut Ignatius’ lead to 42-41 with 1:45 to go in the fourth quarter. Hoban coach Tim Tyrrell and his staff elected to go for two points, but a running play was stopped near the goal line.
St. Ignatius (2-1) got the big stop and then earned a first down in the rain and ran out the clock to seal the victory.
The Wildcats took a 7-0 lead with 10:20 to go in the first quarter when senior quarterback Griffin Hanna threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to senior Henry Cook and senior Rory McConville kicked the extra point.
Hoban then scored 28 unanswered points with big plays on offense and defense.
Hoban senior DeaMonte Trayanum started the scoring outburst with a 17-yard run for a touchdown with 4:04 left in the first quarter and sophomore Charlie Durkin kicked the extra point.
Knights junior quarterback Shane Hamm ran for a 2-yard touchdown with 16 seconds remaining in the first quarter and the Knights led 14-7.
The second quarter featured a 14-yard touchdown run by Trayanum at 10:15, a fumble recovery for a touchdown by Hoban junior Damon Ollison II at 9:16 and a 53-yard field goal by Ignatius junior Declan Mangan at 6:56.
Hoban junior Darryl Peterson III forced the fumble that Ollison recovered, senior Devin Hightower added an interception and Hoban led 28-10 at halftime.
The Knights' lead reached 35-10 with 10:35 to go in the third quarter after Hamm connected with Trayanum on a 37-yard touchdown pass.
Ignatius scored the next 32 points and took a 42-35 lead with two minutes to go in the fourth quarter.
Hanna found junior Alex LaSpina for a 63-yard touchdown pass with 9:58 remaining in the third quarter, and on the next possession hit senior James Crosby with a 33-yard touchdown pass with 7:30 left in the third quarter.
Mangan kicked a 56-yard field goal to cut the Ignatius deficit to 35-27 with 4:21 left in the third quarter.
The fourth quarter included Ignatius senior Jack Welcsh runnning for a 9-yard touchdown at 5:14 and Cook running for two points, and with two minutes to go, Hanna completed a 32-yard touchdown pass to senior Connor Cmiel to make it 42-35.
